Assistant Professor NOVA FCT
André M. Carvalho is Assistant Professor of Quality Engineering and Management at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal.
Graduated in 2012 from the University of Minho, after completing an Integrated Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Management. He worked several positions in Quality Management and Logistics, at Bosch Car Multimedia Portugal and Logoplaste Brazil.
André completed his PhD at the University of Minho, under the MIT Portugal Program sponsorship. Between February 2018 and February 2019, he was a Visiting Student Researcher at the Sociotechnical Systems Research Center at MIT; he was also Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University, Boston (March – September 2019). He concluded his PhD in early 2020, followed by a postdoctoral researcher position at the Technical University of Denmark, where he focused on the development, promotion and use of Digital Tools for Quality and Risk Management in R&D and Production processes.
In 2022 André joined the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, where he teaches Quality Engineering and Management courses. He is a member of the UNIDEMI research center and the Associated Laboratory for Intelligent Systems (LASI).
In his research, he has sought to identify how organizations can best adapt to respond to the challenges of the world around us, with emphasis on change management and the sustainability of the ongoing business transitions. His research has been recognized by organizations such as the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) Society, the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) and American Society for Quality (ASQ), and the Portuguese Association for Quality (APQ). He currently serves as Vice-President of the APQ.
