Overview

The Rehabilitation of Railway Infrastructures is a postgraduate course focused on specific training in the rehabilitation of ballasted railways, which is crucial to the national economy. It will enable trainees to access the labour market more easily, enhance their qualifications in their current roles, or pursue research programmes.

Rail transport is currently facing numerous challenges. Most existing lines are impacted by aging and climate factors and therefore require urgent interventions, but on the other hand, the demands on their carrying capacity continue to rise. Thus, careful planning of maintenance and rehabilitation measures is essential, optimizing interventions based on cost-benefit analysis.

Course content

The curriculum comprises nine units, five of which are mandatory and four optional. The course covers:

 

  • Fundamental concepts about railway inspection and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Composition of the railway, mechanical behaviour of its components with a focus on granular materials.
  • Promotion of computational tools’ utilization, whether in studies related to simulating the railway’s dynamic behaviour and passenger safety or in decision support models.
  • Emphasis on the use of new materials, such as geosynthetics.
Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide complementary training to current Pre-Bologna Graduates, or Post-Bologna Masters. The usefulness of the course is also highlighted for students who have completed only the 1st cycle of higher education in specialties such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related fields.

Trainees will acquire the ability to assess the current state of the railway, propose efficient and effective rehabilitation measures, and evaluate their additive value in terms of improving the dynamic performance of the track.

The diploma requires the completion of 16 ECTS credits, ensured by passing each mandatory curricular unit and two optional ones.

Zuzana Dimitrovová proposed and coordinates the postgraduation in Rehabilitation of Railway Infrastructures, which has already completed four successful editions. She obtained her degree in Civil Engineering (1983, Ing., with distinction) and in Mathematics (1990, Mgr.) from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University and from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague, Czechia, respectively. She completed her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering(1997) at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. From 1985 until now, she has been involved in teaching at four different institutions. She has authored or co authored three thesis, one textbook and more than one hundred scientific publications in international journals, books, and conference proceedings (h-index in Scopus: 14), which together with reports and other publications completes almost two hundred works; is an associate editor of the Journal of Vibration Engineering & Technologies and a member of the editorial board of three other international journals; was the chairman of three international conferences, with another in preparation; delivered several keynote lectures and has been invited to integrate numerous scientific and steering committees. She often participated in the evaluation of European projects, supervised one Ph.D. and several MSc theses, which together with scientific supervisions totalizes more than thirty supervisions. Her current research interests lie in structures subjected to moving loads from an analytical perspective, but also including practical applications in railway dynamics, with a particular interest in railway maintenance and rehabilitation.

Eduardo Fortunato

Eduardo Fortunato obtained his degree in Civil Engineering (1991), MSc in Structures of Civil Engineering (1994), MSc in Business Administration (2009), and PhD (2005) and Habilitation in Civil Engineering (2016). He is Vice-President of the Portuguese Geotechnical Society (2020-2024) and Member of the TC202 – Transportation Geotechnics of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). He participated and coordinated almost forty relevant research national and international projects. He supervised or co-supervised four Ph.D. dissertations and more than thirty MSc theses; he is the author or co-author of three theses, fourteen technical books or chapters, almost fifty research papers peer-reviewed indexed journals and near to one hundred and fifty conference papers; his h-index in Scopus is 20. He has also authored or co-authored almost two hundred and fifty Technical reports, twelve Technical specifications and received four Scientific and technical awards. He participated almost three hundred times in technical and scientific events and delivered almost sixty keynote lectures. He also integrated eight times the jury of PhD thesis and almost fifty times of MSc thesis. His current research interests are: Transportation infrastructures (design, build, renewal, characterization, monitoring, modelling and analysis of the behaviour); Physical and numerical modelling of the mechanical behaviour of geomaterials; Laboratory and in situ characterization of geomaterials and Asset management.
