Program Coordination
André M. Carvalho

Assistant Professor NOVA FCT

André M. Carvalho is Assistant Professor of Quality Engineering and Management at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

He holds an Integrated Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Management from the University of Minho and a PhD in Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing through the MIT Portugal Program. During his doctoral studies, he was a Visiting Student Researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University. He also completed postdoctoral research at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), focusing on digital tools for quality and risk management.

Before joining academia, he held professional roles in quality management and logistics at Bosch Portugal and Logoplaste Brazil. His research focuses on quality and performance management, organizational culture, systems thinking, agility, sustainability, and organizational transformation. His work has received international recognition from organizations including the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) Society, the International Academy for Quality (IAQ), and the American Society for Quality (ASQ).

Radu Godina

Assistant Professor at NOVA FCT

Radu Godina is an Assistant Professor at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he conducts teaching and research in the fields of industrial engineering, operations management, and manufacturing technologies. He serves on the Executive Board of UNIDEMI – the Research and Development Unit in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, which is part of the Associate Laboratory of Intelligent Systems (LASI) – and leads the Sustainable and Digital Factories & Services research group.

His research focuses on several areas, including sustainable and digital manufacturing, Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, industrial symbiosis, circular economy, life cycle assessment, additive manufacturing, and quality control. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 indexed scientific publications and has established an extensive network of collaborations with international universities and industrial partners.

He has participated in and coordinated national and European applied research projects, including initiatives related to maritime logistics, industrial sustainability, and the environmental, economic, and social assessment of additive manufacturing processes. He previously served as Coordinator of the Master’s Programme in Maritime Logistics and of the international postgraduate programme Maritime Logistics Business and Operations, both taught in English.

He also acts as an expert evaluator for several international research funding agencies, including the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ), and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). As a representative of NOVA FCT, he has also contributed to the development of Portuguese standardization documents at the Portuguese Institute for Quality (IPQ).

In addition, he has been consecutively included over the past three years in the prestigious Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists Ranking, which identifies the world’s most influential researchers, thereby contributing to the international recognition and visibility of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
