FOTO-C is a short course focused on the preservation and conservation of scientific photography collections. Photographs serve as visual evidence of scientific discoveries and experiments, documenting the progress of science and constituting fundamental pillars for the development of current knowledge. Their preservation is crucial to safeguarding and enhancing its value for the future.
The preservation of scientific photography collections relies on raising awareness and providing training of all those involved in managing this cultural heritage. FOTO-C aims to contribute to this effort by promoting best conservation practices. This practical course is dedicated to the identification and diagnosis of different types of photographs, employing specialized methodologies tailored for the safeguard of this unique heritage.
Organized in partnership with the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at NOVA University of Lisbon, which houses a vast collection of photographic specimens, FOTO-C will be held at this institution. Throughout the course, specimens from the collection will be used as case studies, providing an opportunity to address preservation issues in a hands-on, real-world setting, where dialogue and teamwork will be encouraged.
This approach makes FOTO-C highly relevant, offering participants from different fields and institutions the chance to share knowledge and engage in discussions about conservation methodologies. The course also equips participants with essential tools to take the first steps in preserving this heritage, contributing to its continued enhancement.
FOTO-C is a two-day course, organized into four modules, focused on the preservation and conservation of photographic specimens, addressing topics relevant to professionals and students working with this type of heritage. The course will be held in person at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at NOVA University Lisbon. At the end of the four modules, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
The course begins with a general introduction to FOTO-C, where participants will be presented with the course objectives, structure, and methodologies. Participants will also be invited to introduce themselves and share their experiences related to the course topic or their reasons for interest in it.
The course includes two practical modules, during which participants will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the theoretical modules to selected case studies. A visit to the institution will also be organized.
With its theoretical and practical structure, FOTO-C aims to be a course focused on sharing and teamwork, serving as a platform for networking and promoting ideas and best practices in the preservation and conservation of scientific photography collections.
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
The preservation of scientific photography collections relies on the awareness and training of all those involved, directly or indirectly, in managing this cultural heritage. This course is designed for anyone looking to deepen their knowledge of photographs conservation, contributing to its preservation and valorisation.
The course is especially relevant for:
