Luis Barreto Xavier is an Innovation Consultant at Abreu Advogados (since 2018) and President of its Knowledge Institute (since 2019). He is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Portugal, where he teaches and conducts research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence Law (since 2019), Digital Law (since 2023), and Private International Law. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Research Group on Law and Artificial Intelligence at the Católica Research Centre for the Future of Law. He is co-coordinator of the executive training program “Leading Digital Compliance: Strategies for NIS2, DSA & AI Act” at UCP. He is also co-editor of the book Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the Law, published in open access by the international publisher Springer in 2024.

Previously, he was the founder and Director of Católica Global School of Law (2009–2018), a school of UCP aimed at an international legal audience and part of international education and research networks. He served as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, Legal Adviser to the Secretary of State for Tourism, Senior Consultant at the Legal Center of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and Adviser at the Office of the Judges of the Constitutional Court.
