A practical and dynamic course addressing the main challenges of preventive conservation in industrial and scientific heritage collections. Through an action-oriented approach, participants explore effective strategies for planning, implementing and evaluating preventive conservation measures that help protect these collections and slow their deterioration.

PREV C focuses on the preventive conservation of industrial and scientific heritage collections, a growing field that presents distinct challenges for heritage professionals. Although these collections have received relatively little scholarly attention and institutional recognition, they are characterised by considerable material, functional and contextual diversity, requiring approaches tailored to their specific characteristics.
This two-day course combines theoretical foundations with practical learning to support the safeguarding of this heritage through evidence-based and applicable preventive conservation practices. Participants explore key topics related to the materiality of objects, the processes of change and deterioration they undergo, and appropriate strategies for their long-term preservation. Collaborative exercises and guided discussions foster active participation and encourage critical reflection on the challenges of preventive conservation.
Organised as part of the activities of the EPPIC group, with the support of institutional partners responsible for industrial and scientific heritage collections, PREV C draws on real-life case studies to address practical issues in preventive conservation. This approach strengthens the relevance of the course while promoting the exchange of experiences, knowledge and methodologies among professionals from a range of institutional contexts.

PREV C is organised into nine theoretical modules, each complemented by a corresponding practical component, delivered over two days. It provides a balanced approach that integrates scientific knowledge, practical tools and adaptable methodologies, establishing a solid foundation for the development of skills in preventive conservation across a range of institutional contexts.
Practical sessions allow participants to consolidate their learning through collaborative exercises and hands-on experience with conservation tools and equipment. The collections of the Museum of Communications provide a real-world learning environment, enabling participants to apply key concepts to authentic case studies and collection-based scenarios.
Throughout the course, participants are encouraged to exchange experiences, reflect on shared challenges and explore sustainable approaches to preventive conservation. The programme is designed to strengthen participants’ ability to contribute to the planning and implementation of preventive conservation programmes within multidisciplinary teams.
PREV C is delivered in person in Lisbon, offering an interactive and collaborative learning environment. Participants who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Metal conservator-restorer and researcher at LIBPhys, NOVA School of Science and Technology NOVA-FCT
Isabel Tissot is a metal conservator-restorer and researcher at LIBPhys, NOVA University Lisbon. Her research focuses on developing analytical and conservation strategies for the study and preservation of metal heritage, with particular emphasis on industrial, scientific, and technical heritage objects.
She holds a PhD in Physical Engineering and a master’s degree in Applied Electrochemistry from the University of Lisbon. Isabel also holds a degree in Conservation-Restoration from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and a bachelor’s degree from the former Escola Superior de Conservação-Restauro de Lisboa. She received a research grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to study conservation at the Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique (IRPA-KIK) in Belgium.
With over 20 years of experience, Isabel has worked as a conservator in both the public and private sectors. She has been part of the R&D team at Haute-École Conservation-Restauration in Switzerland and has worked as a conservator at the former Portuguese Institute for Conservation and Restoration (now the Laboratório Instituto José de Figueiredo) and the company Archeofactu in Portugal. As a guest assistant professor, she has taught metal conservation at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, the Portuguese Catholic University, and the NOVA University of Lisbon.
Isabel is committed to promoting the safeguarding of industrial, scientific, and technical heritage. Her goal is to enhance this heritage by highlighting and preserving both its tangible and intangible dimensions in an interdisciplinary manner.
Researcher at LIBPhys and a collaborator at VICARTE, NOVA School of Science and Technology NOVA-FCT
Marta Manso is a researcher at LIBPhys and a collaborator at VICARTE, both part of NOVA School of Science and Technology. Her research focuses on the development of analytical methodologies for the study and preservation of cultural heritage, with an emphasis on industrial and scientific heritage.
She holds a PhD and a degree in Physics from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon. Since 2006, she has worked in the field of cultural heritage, encompassing graphic documents, painting, tiles, and metals, in collaboration with various national and international institutions, both public and private, in the fields of history, conservation and restoration, and materials science, including museums, archives, and scientific laboratories.
She is also an assistant professor at the Department of Art and Heritage Sciences of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon, where she is dedicated to training new professionals.
Her mission is to contribute to the safeguarding of industrial and scientific heritage, promoting its study, appreciation, and integration into society’s collective memory.
