Gamification in Citizenship and Society
Overview

The “Gamification in Citizenship and Society” module explores the application of gamification to the design of civic participation, community engagement, and collective action experiences, in institutional, community, digital, and territorial contexts.

In a context marked by distrust, disengagement from institutions, and participatory fatigue, many citizenship processes fail not due to a lack of relevant causes, but because of insufficient continuous engagement, unclear impact, and limited sense of individual agency.

This module is based on the premise that citizenship is not decreed—it is built. Gamification emerges as a social design tool that structures participatory processes, makes contributions visible, reinforces collective progress, and creates safe spaces for civic experimentation.

Throughout the module, participants will learn how to design citizenship experiences that foster conscious participation, collaboration, and trust among individuals, communities, and institutions.

Course Content

The “Gamification in Citizenship and Society” module focuses on applying gamification as a tool for designing social and participatory processes.

Citizenship involves complexity, diverse interests, and outcomes that often unfold over the long term. Gamification enables the structuring of these processes, making contributions visible and providing feedback that reinforces ongoing engagement without oversimplifying social realities.

Throughout the module, participants will explore how to transform civic participation from a one-off act into a continuous and meaningful experience.

This module offers a practical and strategic approach to creating citizenship processes that foster conscious participation, collaboration, and real collective impact.

Learning Outcomes

This module is designed to empower professionals to use gamification as a strategic tool to strengthen citizenship and social participation.

By the end of the module, participants will be able to:

  • Apply principles of behavioral design to citizenship processes and community engagement.

  • Design participatory journeys that are clear, inclusive, and progressive.

  • Create systems that reinforce a sense of agency, belonging, and collective responsibility.

  • Integrate gamification in institutional, community, and digital contexts.

  • Align social objectives with engagement and real impact metrics.

Innovation is My Playground. For over three decades, I have been dedicated to creating playful experiences—from the world of video games to the practical application of gamification strategies across diverse contexts.

I have worked with companies such as Activision/Blizzard, Gameloft, 2K Games, and SONY Europe, where as a game designer, I also developed my knowledge on how game design can inspire motivating and effective solutions in education, team engagement, customer loyalty, and beyond in both corporate and societal environments

Over the past six years at Worten, I developed innovation frameworks and products aimed at motivating, engaging, and retaining both employees and consumers.

I am an early adopter of GenAI, having created the Generative Storytelling (GEST) framework, which leverages the latest generative AI technologies to amplify human creativity. I believe in co-creation: AI expands possibilities, generates new ideas, and personalizes immersive, impactful experiences that deeply engage audiences.

In the Postgraduate Program in Gamification, my goal is to share this vision and experience, helping each participant design transformative projects where playfulness and innovation become strategic allies for achieving memorable results.

Let’s build the future together—one epic experience at a time.
